I doubt very much when you alighted from bed this morning you gave much thought to what will be in 300 hundred years, you were probably more concerned about stepping in dog shit and whether the coffee was ready. Yet you got yourself up from that warm bed with the grim determination that what you were about do meant something. Meant something meaningful and had purpose. The first of 6 impossible things you will need to believe to get through the day. Followed closely by ‘my partner loves me’, ‘the kids will turn out ok’, ‘despite my boss being an ass it’s fine working for this guy’, ‘my work at least pays the bills.’ And ‘hey ain’t I just grand for doing all this in the first place.’ Now to the coffee.
After the mental gymnastics and emotional repression have subsided and you have comfortably fitted yourself into the deep regret that is adult life, what now? Why? Why repeat this Sisyphean task over and over and over and…. After 18 it’s all hit repeat anyway but with the added joy of diapers, divorce and crushing debt. Have you even thought about it? Probably not in any important way, not in the way that would cause you to reconsider doing it all again tomorrow morning. There is just this angry Jabberwock eating its way from inside to out and you’ll be fucked if you know why. Or not. Maybe you are the church twice on Sunday guy who knows exactly which shirt goes with Thursday’s pants. The last honest question you asked was in grade school when you wanted to know why Mary Ellen’s sweater fit her funny now.
In either case our assumptions and answers are about the same. Canned, easily regurgitated and repeated for reward like a bunch of bald chicks gaping to be fed. So that’s what we are going to tackle here on The Dubious Fool. Why. What puts lead in our pencil? What drives us to war? Why does humanity now stand at the precipice of It’s own demise but none of us seem willing to take that one step back? We are going to hurtle right down the Rabbit Hole and along the way learn some science, hear some opposing points of view, and challenge the assumptions we all hold so close. If we are careful maybe we will find away to move past being connected and learn what it means to live in community in this, the 21st.
Strap in folks it’s nothing but sex, politics and religion from here on in; with a few adulting skills thrown in so your mother can at least mention your name in public. I expect it will be a raucous trip.
